The White Chair (1987)
I drew a chair in white on yellow paper,
part of a phantom graffito,
then stars vacuumed
from the glass surface
where a plastic doll once hung,
while on a Christmas card
the Virgin Mary was discovering
a baby Jesus among the ornaments on the tree.
I was not thinking about the extinguished train car
in which a soldier is sighing over a woman’s legs,
no sugar for the tea he drinks.
